John McCrae was a poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I and a surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres. He is best known for writing the famous war memorial poem "In Flanders Fields".
McCrae was buried with full military honours at Wimereux, France. His casket was transported on a gun carriage draped with the Union Flag. Even the highest ranking Canadian Military officer, General Sir Arthur Currie, attended. Wimereux Communal Cemetery Plot IV. H. 3.
