Date of Death: January 5, 1987 Place of death: Lakefield, Ontario Cause of death: Cancer: lung. The cancer had spread and rather than suffer, Laurence took her own life.

    She was buried in her hometown in the Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa, Manitoba. Her ashes were brought by her children, Jocelyn and David, to be interred in Riverside Cemetery, Neepawa, on June 23, the day before the official opening of The Margaret Laurence Home, the house where she had lived in her youth.
